It's that time of year, where you need to wear some green so the leprechauns don't pinch you!
​St. Patrick's Day! 
This year I have a new take on the holiday and incorporating the Irish flag. I have a whole playlist on my channel for my previous makeup looks and nail tutorials if you want more inspiration.

     I was really stuck this year trying to think of a new take on St Patrick's Day makeup, as it is usually lots and lots of green. As I haven't added any new green colours to my collection, I wanted to do something a bit different. I played around with a few different ideas for incorporating the white, but wanted to keep it a bit more "wearable" so opted for inner corner highlight instead of white liquid liner utilized in any manner! 

     I really do like how this look came out, I don't really touch green makeup very often but I like how it looks with my eyes. The copper colour definitely makes my eyes pop versus the green that blends in more with my eyes as blue and the tiny bit of yellow are analogous to the green on a colour wheel. Holidays like this tend to push my out of my regular looks and I really need to do it more.

Cleaning makeup brushes is one of those tasks that no one cares for, so a lot of us slip up. This $3.90* treat from Forever21 has made the daunting task of washing brushes much less formidable.

      I'm just as guilty as the next gal for not cleaning my brushes nearly as often as I should. I've tried DIY hacks for brush cleaning and I've resorted to just using my hands, but I've always been interested in the silicone mats/tools to help make the cleaning process easier. I know that there have been maaannnyyy different products on the market for years, but I've never been convinced to spend that much money on a cleaning tool.

     So I've looked around for more affordable versions but never got around to picking one up. I had the Brush Egg on my list for quite some time and was very close to picking it up once or twice but always hesitated because it seems so small. So, when I was in New York last February, I took a quick peruse around Forever21 when I spotted several brush cleaning tools. 

     I had picked up one for $4.90 that was round and fit more in your hand while cleaning but then while glancing around at other shelves this one popped up, all alone, and it was bigger (almost twice the size) and a dollar cheaper (in the US - it's $4.90 in Canada*)...so you already know it was the winner! 

​​     I really like the idea of different sections, though I didn't use them quite the way they were initially designed. There are two sections for washing eyes and two for rinsing, but I find that each of the sections work best for different size/shapes of brushes. Brushes that are fluffier and round I use in the dog bone shape or the little dot nubs in the middle and those that are flat and  more dense, I will use the large mounds and the lines/squiggles to really get deep into them. 
     Here is a before and after:

     It does a really good job cleaning overall. I place some baby shampoo over the mat and then I rinse my brush before starting to swirl it around. I'll wash a few of my brushes before the shampoo gets too grimy and then I rinse the mat off along with the brushes and give them a once over along the mat. Then I will leave them to air dry - occasionally I'll run them quickly through a towel to get excess moisture out of them. I will dry the mat off after its rinse and store it under my bathroom sink as it's only about 6 x 4 inches in size. 

   I don't find it overly hard or damaging to your brushes because it's all dependent on the pressure you apply to the brush. My BH Cosmetics brush is getting old and that's why it looks a little ruffled post-wash. You just need to be mindful of the type of brush and the style when washing to find which area of the mat is the best for it. Overall I think this is a great purchase, incredibly affordable, decent size and could easy be packed for travel if you didn't want to bring too many brushes with you. 

     I would love to know you what you use to clean your brushes and how often you do it! I let it pile up and then I do it all at once which can take a while and I fear the time has come once again!

On August 23rd 2018, Urban Decay released a touching funeral video to their channel announcing that their cult classic Naked Palette was going to be discontinued after 8 years.
So here are 4 looks you can wear to the funeral.

The Urban Decay Naked Palette originally released in 2010, which is less than a year before I started both my blog and my youtube channel. It was one of the first palettes that I saw in tutorials online when I got started but at that point UD was too pricey for my undergraduate budget. It was always a very nice palette to look at but I was loving using colours like my BH Cosmetics 120 palettes, which got the party started for me. 

I did not own this makeup palette until just under a year ago when my bestie was doing one of her famous collection purges. I later received both the Naked 2 and Naked 3 palettes as well. I've always been a sucker for a nice transition shade and a lot of sparkle, so colours like Virgin, Naked, Buck, Half Baked & Toasted REALLY jump out to me. Gunmetal may have been the shade that surprised me the most, for the better. 

From left to right the shades are: Virgin, Sin, Naked, Sidecar, Buck, Half Baked, Smog, Darkhorse, Toasted, Hustle, Creep & Gunmetal. Almost all of the shades swatch really nicely, without being patchy except for Buck and Creep, though with a brush on the lids, Buck does great, Creep is still a touch patchy but totally workable. The shimmery shades are just so pretty and can work with so many looks. I remember some of the original complains about this palette were the limited mattes and the number of shimmers, but we've all got over that now! So here are four different looks I created with this palette to help see it off to rest.

Easy Daytime Look
This look is a soft, easy to wear look for any time, it brightens up the eye and adds subtle definition to the outer corner and crease. This is a great look to wear to work if you're just getting comfortable with makeup or simply prefer a neutral nude look. It's basic but it gets the job done. You can also quite easily adapt this look for a night out if you bring your palette with you to work and touch it up before getting dinner or drinks with coworkers or friends.

Golden Halo Look
This look is a bit bolder, but still not too crazy for wearing during the day if you are in a work environment that isn't opposed to it. I've always loved the look of the halo trend and adapted it for my eye shape without going "super IG" with it. Deepening the inner and outer corner of your eye and placing a shimmery or bright shade in the middle, really adds light to your eye. I loved the golden/bronze vibe with this, especially with summer coming to a close - it works great with a tan & it adds extra zest if you're a blue eyed babe as brown tones make your eyes stand out.

Subtle Cut Crease Look
There are a few combinations of colours in the Naked Palette that could work really nicely in a cut crease look, but I wanted to try to use as many different shadows as possible so that's why I used Toasted as the pop of colour. Again, this technique can be really..well...overdone. So my version is a little softer in the end result. I could have definitely intensified the outer corner and would have LOVED to add a glitter line to emphasize the cut crease, but I don't have any on hand that would have worked.

Smokey Eye Look
It's been a long time since I've worn a really dark and sultry smokey eye but when I saw Creep and Gunmetal, I knew exactly what I was going to use them for. I didn't find creep super pigmented but gunmetal more than made up for it. Creep is also not matte which I forgot at first but it helped build the base for gunmetal, which really got to sparkle. The photo does not do it justice, the reflects in gunmetal looked so awesome with my blue eyes and really made them pop! You could totally blow this look out more, I find that with my eye shape it seems very blown out until I see it in photos, but work with what you're comfortable with! I definitely am looking for an excuse to wear this look out soon.

I recently had the opportunity through the Canadian Beauty Bloggers Network and Givenchy Beauty Canada to try out one of their new mascaras, the Noir Interdit. This is probably the most expensive mascara I've ever tried, as I've just always found a drug store one to suit my needs, but ooooh baby! I have a few things to say about this one...

Let's start with the basics.
Givenchy Noir Interdit Mascara is sold exclusively at Sephora and retails for $38 CDN.
It is available in one shade, which is a deep black. It is a lengthen & buildable volume formula.
It has an innovative wand that bends 90 degrees and the comb of the wand is only on one side.
This mascara is suppose to give a lash extension effect while defining your lashes.

​     When this mascara first hit YouTube on channels like Tati's GlamLifeGuru, it caught many eyes due to it's unique feature of a bending wand. This wand does in fact bend back to a 90 degree angle to give a different vertical lift. It seems a bit strange at first and yet very intriguing - so I wanted to give it a shot. It's definitely a strange feeling at first since it's more of a pushing straight up motion versus a rolling wrist and personally, I think I prefer to use it as a regular wand. I'm sure I could get used to it on an angle and use it better but for now I prefer it the "normal" way. 
     The wand head is also a bit different than usual, as it's more of a comb and covers only half of the head. It really does help to brush through the lashes as you apply the mascara and I find it helps to lessen the potential for clumps. It really does give you a lengthening effect which I love in a mascara. I've never really pinpointed what my favourite mascara is based on a desired effect, I just usually like the way it feels and wears - but for this one I can say I love that it stretches my lashes and gives me a wide-eyed effect. Also, I'm not sure if I'm the only one - as it isn't mentioned on any of the packaging - but it has a very unique perfume-y scent to it and I kinda love it. I'm not familiar with many Givenchy scents (the only one I know is Irresistible) but it was just so unexpected. You only really smell it when applying and the tube is open, so I don't think it would bother anyone who is sensitive to smells but just in case that may be a problem for some, I thought I'd mention it.

     Overall, I am pretty impressed with this mascara. I haven't really tried to build it up as that isn't something I tend to do with mascara - I'm a one application gal. But I will continue to try it out and perhaps be wild enough to layer on a couple of coats and see what happens!

The summer season is here, so too is wedding season. Now personally, I've only ever attended 3 weddings in my whole (adult) life; two of which were in the last year. So I'm still new to the wedding attendee thing, but I think I did alright!

     The couple in question, one half is one of Scott's best friends, Chris, whom he's known for most of his life. His wife, Boston, is the infamous Boston to which I've referred in several videos/vlogs. I couldn't have been happier to attend their wedding one month ago (yesterday). They are such a great couple & I wish them nothing but happiness in life. It also helps that they are both teachers, so I've bonded with them on another level as well. 
     I didn't get to take many photos of my outfit as I became an impromptu wedding photographer as they didn't have one & I wanted to make sure that they had some amazing photos to remember their special day. 
     The makeup look I went for was a soft but bright glow as I wanted to play up the colours in my dress and not take away too much from my bold blue heels. This look is great for summer in general or daily wear - especially if you're someone with blue eyes, as the tones will really make your eyes pop. 

     They also had a fun photo booth at their wedding with TONNES of fun props to include. They were printed out on the spot but the original images were also sent to the bride+groom, so I got my hands on a couple of ones that I took with Scott. The second one was insisted upon by the bride & (bless her) she ALWAYS tells people what I do online and tries to rally support, for which I'm eternally grateful.

I had never heard of ARTDECO cosmetics but when I got my hands on these custom palettes my friend Boston made, I was very excited. One of these palettes will make all you neutral lovers happy and the other is for all my mermaids.

     Each of these palettes holds 4 shadow pans that fit in magnetically. The eyeshadow pans are a decent size and it's great that you can interchange pans in a single palette if you're traveling. So here are the two palettes opened up...look at those colours! 

     For the first palette, it has a more neutral vibe and would suit a variety of skin tones. The name of the colours are from left to right.

     For the second palette, it has a more mermaid vibe due to having blues and greens. These would be great pops of colour on the bottom lash line, especially for the summer. The name of the colours are from left to right.

     I have yet to play around with the blue/green shades much but I've dabbled with the neutral shades on my lids a time or two. They feel quite nice when swatching them, and have some good pigmentation. The majority of these shadows in both palettes are shimmery and are either a pearl or duochrome finish so they would benefit from packing them on the lid (vs. sweeping) and if you use some sort of spray (i.e. Fix+) to help intensify them even more. 
     I feel the neutral palette has a complete eye look in it, while the mermaid palette has colours you would add to other looks and isn't a stand alone palette. Though to be fair, it wasn't made to be an all-in-one palette - she chose those colours to have in her collection. 
     They have over 150 shades to choose from and a range of palette sizes from 2 to 12 shadows, so you have a lot of options. You also have 6 different finishes for the shadows.

I'm as guilty as the next gal for getting stuck in a rut and reaching for the same products all the time, but I do love to try new things! My friend Gillian passed along a few bits and bobs over the weekend from her recent decuttering (I clearly have amazing friends) and I wanted to put them to the test! So here are some first impressions of the products used in my latest tutorial.

     I love purple; it's one of my favourite colours so I was excited to try the ELF baked shadows. I haven't tried new ELF products in AGES - other than the brow duo I bought a little while ago, I don't think I've purchased ELF since I started my blog! I know that ELF can be hit or miss for many but at such an affordable price I think it's always worth a shot. So I went for a purple eye to utilize a MAC pigment and then a more nude/brown lip.

First Impressions
     I will work through the list and as this is a first impression it won't be long, if you would like a more detailed review on any of the products just leave me a comment! 

NARS Foundation 
     I have to admit I didn't really look at the jar indications, I held the jar to my skin and said, "yeah I'll try it," even though I know it said medium and in NO world am I a "medium" skin tone.  It actually didn't look so bad on me in the long run; I thought it was beginning to oxidize in the video but I wore it for ~5 hours and it didn't look too bad. I will admit that I only noticed it was a sheer GLOW foundation after I noticed how I looked a little oily and the coverage was in fact on the more natural side as you could still see my freckles. So if you have dry skin with no problem areas this would be perfect!

ColourPop Cheek
     I obviously used it as a contour/bronzing colour because it is way too dark for me to use as a colour on my cheeks. I know that their products are fussier with brushes and this was my first time using a face product from them. I found the pigment noticeable on me and it seemed to be willing to build up a bit. So it served its purpose for this look though I will see how much it can be built up over a more full coverage foundation.

NARS Blush
     I now own the infamous Orgasm blush, I have an older blush from ELF called Glow that to me always seemed an affordable dupe. I was going light handed when I applied it so I didn't have a lot of payoff but it gave me the natural flush I was going for. I also think this blush would benefit from being used over a fuller coverage foundation. 

Benefit Watt's Up
     First product from Benefit that I've tried and I love it! It's a mini sample but applied smoothly and pigmented for a nice highlight. I will definitely be reaching for this one more often as I find the colour works well for my tones and doesn't come across as too gold. In most swatches I've seen it seems to pull gold but not too champagne-y (if that makes ANY sense aha) so pale girls can rock this without it looking too streaked on.  

NYX Wonder Stick - Light
     I only used the highlight end and didn't have to drag it too much to get colour payoff. It isn't overly thick but I don't feel it gave me much highlight on my face. I am quite light handed with this type of product, especially with a lighter finish foundation, as I don't want stripes of paler colour on my face. I am thinking of doing a comparison between this product and the two versions I have from Wet n Wild and Hard Candy and really giving them a run for their money. 

ELF Baked Eyeshadow Trio - Lavender Love
     I like it, but I'm not in love with it. I can't seem to find it on their website anymore but I'm going to venture a guess that it probably costs $3-4. I think the darkest shade was easily the most pigmented, then comes the lightest shade, the medium purple shade didn't have a lot of colour pay off. Perhaps if I dug into the pan a bit more I'd have got more pigmentation. I wonder if these would be more pigmented over a white base...

MAC Pigment - Push the Edge
     I've never worked with pigments before and I don't own Fix+ but working with this one wasn't too intimidating. I would be interesting in trying it with some sort of spray to give it more intensity as I found that blending it made it disappear quite easily. I also didn't have the stickiest base to apply it to so I shall give it a whirl under other conditions. The shade itself is quite pretty and doesn't come off quite as dark as it looks in the jar.

Revlon Mega Multiplier - Brown Black
     This item was sent to me by Influenster for consideration so I will have a full post on it coming up in a few days after I've tried it out a few times. 

NYX Liquid Suede - Sandstorm
     This is another product I've been eyeing for a while but just haven't made my way to the mall yet to grab it. I love brown tones that aren't too deep and make me look like paper and this one is a perfect shade. I can't wait to pair this with a bronzed/gold eye look. It applied smoothly with no patches and it's quite pigmented. It lasted well through the day as well (including lots of tea) which is always a good sign.  

Quo Lipgloss - Earth Balance ​
     I enjoy glosses but don't reach for them much on a daily basis but this is such a nice shade that I want to try it out over a wide range of lipstick colours. It is slightly thicker but didn't give me that stringy look when rubbing my lips together. It has a high shine which looks great on the centre of the lips. 

Tools
     These were both picked up at the Dollarstore for under $3 a piece. The brush was a complete fail...I know this shape brush was all the rage a short while ago and I thought I would try out a cheaper one to see if it was worth it but that backfired. Still not sold on the idea of purchasing a set but I'm still intrigued about why they are so special. The makeup sponge is worth while and worked well, I'm going to do a full comparison with my Real Techniques sponge which is also quite affordable. I know that some Dollarstore locations have more sponge shapes now as well, and it's hit or miss if you will find them because their stocking is different for each location. It also comes in a bunch of different colours. 

Overall Thoughts
     Most products worked pretty well, though some I need to work with more to figure out if I really do like them. The only complete fail was the brush, everything else has potential. OH CANADA!
Canada is turning 150 tomorrow and I'll be turning 26! So I thought it would be fun to share some festive looking makeup and nails with you guys, if you wanted to go all out.

     So I've only JUST started to see photos of the latest "floating/invisible" eyeliner trend and
- oh my god - some of them are STUNNING. I had just enough time between packing for the long weekend and getting my nails done (birthday treat) to try out the look with some red and white. I would play around with it a bit more if I were to film it (or even to do a second eye) but I'm actually really pleased with how it turned out. The silver glitter helped along with the punchy white on the inner portion of my eye (vs. actual inner corner). If I filmed this I would definitely amp it up with some falsies. Of course, I had to go in with some bright red lips and gloss them up at well because red lips go with everything DUH. 

     Now for the nails, the first look I did while I was playing around with tonnes of different red/white themed designs. This was one of probably 11-12 designs and helped to inspire the manicure I went for while at the salon. I liked some of the other designs I did but since it was a mash up I won't be posting it here but I may post it over on my instastory since I like some but not others aha.
​I am excited to try this manicure with different colours and changing up the dots to lines and see how it looks. 

     If you don't follow my Twitter you probably missed out on my tweets about #nailsalonstruggles. We all know that it can be difficult when you have tonnes of different ideas but for one reason or another they can't/don't get it. So I decided to totally tone down my thoughts and went with a twist on the classic French manicure. I really quite like it even thought it's more "elegant" than what I was aiming for (think white nails - big red design). I've also realized that I think I'lll stick to doing my own nail art vs. doing it at a salon. 
     Not shown here are my toes! They were up on my instastories the other day - I went simple and did all white and on the big toe there is some silver glitter splashed on. I'm being an optimist that I'll get some colour this weekend and the white will help to make it pop! Even when I'm pale the white helps a lot.

     I'm vlogging this weekend - which you'll know if you watched my latest video so be sure to look out for that next week on my channel. So hopefully I'll end up doing all the fun stuff we have planned if the weather holds up. We're having friends up to the cottage for a couples weekend, and aiming to get out on the water for tubing, wakeboarding and seadooing. Plus I have a fun photo booth planned with some Canada props to get everyone in the mood to celebrate!

I LOVE watching lip swatch videos online, and if you've been following me for any length of time you  know that lipsticks are my favourite beauty product. I could happily live my life wearing nothing but lipstick. I thought I would start a mini series on my channel going through different brands and sharing swatches of all the products I have, so I decided to start with MAC. 

     I have ten shades to share that range from corals to brown/nudes, purples to red with finishes that range from glossy lustre to retro matte.      I've been trying to figure out which colour is my favourite. Ruby Woo holds a special place in my heart as it was my first MAC lippy and I actually won it in a giveaway from a fellow YouTuber Shirley B Eniang .
